The objective was to instill a touch of elegance along with a healthy dose of handmade creative charm to this exceptional neighborhood Café, tieing together the eccentric décor with three distinct tile designs that, at their root, aesthetically relate.
Raku Backsplash Tile
The term Raku (literally, "enjoyment" or "ease") for this kind of pottery derives from Jurakudai, In the 16th century, the Japanese tea master Sen Rikyu, who was involved with the construction of the Jurakudai palace of Kyoto, witnessed a rapid roof tile making technique that produced accidentally unique ware and had the tile-maker, Chojiro, produce hand-molded tea bowls, following the same technique, for use in the Wabi style of tea ceremony. Raku then became the name of the family that produced the popular wares. Both the name and the ceramic style have been passed down through the family to the present 15th generation (Kichizaemon)
